Oatie
This wonderful story comes from a most important person
at One By One, Kathy Walker
Oatie
is a tabby and white bobtail mix male kitty who came to the 1x1
shelter as a kitten.
He suffered neurological damage from a very poor beginning in his
life. I was told that the vet who first saw him actually recommended
that he be put down due to his poor condition, stating he would
never amount to anything.
I met Oatie when I first began to volunteer at 1x1, and like everyone
else there, I loved this sweet guy. Although Oatie lived at the
shelter, he was very unstable and did not climb very well so he
spent most of his time on the floor. His day finally came and he
was adopted as a "special needs" cat to a nurse who had
a lot of other animals who were challenged like Oatie. A year passed
and Oatie was returned to us when his person's lifestyle changed.
I was thrilled to have a second chance to know Oatie but sad for
him that he had to came back to the shelter.
I told my husband about this sweet cat and explained how sad it
was for him because he was limited in his movement by the space
of the shelter floor. We decided to bring Oatie home as a foster
kitty so he could have the freedom of movement a home would allow
him. Once in our home we soon discovered he was also deaf.
With all his challenges he proved to be the most loving cat you
would ever want to meet. He is a big goof ball who loves attention
and follows everyone around like a dog seeking a pat on the head,
he even wags his stub of a tail.
Six months after Oatie joined our cat clan we decided Oatie could
not be our foster kitty any longer because he belonged with us forever.
Now more than a year later Oatie has far surpassed any expectation
we could have ever dreamed for him. He not only climbs and jumps,
but he moves through our house like a little tornado chasing and
playing with the other cats, leaving nothing but wreckage behind
him - not bad for a floor cat!
Oats is truly a delightful cat, and we are so happy to have the
pleasure of his company in our lives.
